The UNESCO World Heritage listed Royal Chitwan National Park is located in the lowland of the Inner Terai Region of southern Nepal near the border with India. The park has an area of 932 sq. km and was created in 1973. In 1984 it was listed as a World Heritage Site as the best example of a pristine lowland Terai in the Indian subcontinent.
The park is rich in wildlife with a wide range mammals, birds and reptiles. It is most famous for its population of over 500 one-horned Asiatic rhinoceros as well as a large population of the rare Royal Bengal tiger. Other mammal species include elephants, leopard, sloth bear, wild boar, rhesus monkey, grey langur and several species of deer.
