Trip Overview

Makalu Base Camp trek is a wonderful trek that gets you close to the world’s fifth highest mountain, Makalu. This majestic pyramid shaped mountain dominates the landscape at a height of 8462m, a truly imposing sight.

This trek into the Makalu Barun National Park trek offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas. The lower part of the trek passes through lush rhododendron forests of the Arun Valley and villages inhabited by Limbu, Newar, Rai and Sherpa ethnic groups. From here, the views of the Chamlang Range are sensational.

After crossing Shipton La Pass (4210m) the trail enters the Barun Khola Valley. You will have spectacular views of nearby glaciers, waterfalls and towering rocky cliffs before heading on to Makalu Base Camp where the scenery is magnificent. The towering south face of Makalu as well as Everest and Lhotse are in clear view as is the Barun Glacier.

The trek starts with a short one hour flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (860m) followed by a three hour drive to Chichila (1,980m) where the trek commences. After trekking through picturesque and interesting villages of Num (1490m), Sedua (1460m) and Tashi Gaon (2070m) we reach Kauma (3470m) where we have an extra night for rest and acclimatisation. After leaving Kauma we trek over Shipton La Pass (4210m) to the village of Mumbuk (3570m) before continuing on to Makalu Base Camp (5000m,) with overnight stops at Neha Kharka (4310m) and Sherson (4615m). We have a day to explore around Makalu Base Camp before returning via the same route to Tashi Gaon where the trail diverts through the villages of Pakuwa (1520m) and Bumling (1160m) before returning to Tumlingtar and a flight back to Kathmandu.
